So, Recently i've been trying to make Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 usable for my grandmother who is "Computer Illiterate" I thought at first, i'd just use Kiba-Block, or a *ewwww* Mac OSX theme. Either way, I just didn't see it working for her. It's a tiny little sylvania Netbook, Teaching new things to old people, is there anything more challenging? Either way, I stumbled accross Gos, An operating system i still don't fully understand, but it appears to be a google-xp-ubuntu based OS...HOW!!!! I was trying to understand how someone could do it....It's been done, the new beta v.3.0 is really amazing, I had to run the iso (697mb) to a flash seeing as the netbook isn't big enough for a cd drive. Installed in about 10 minutes, run's, operates, easy setup, Vista like desktop gadgets, with the default 10gb hd in the Sylvania netbook, it took up 2k mb for the ENTIRE os...anyone noticed the vista default install (IE without using a preboot vlite edition) it's around 6-7 gb's...

From the guys at Slashdot:
BBitmaster writes "An extremely critical bug and security threat was discovered in Ubuntu Breezy Badger 5.10 earlier today by a visitor on the Ubuntu Forums that allows anyone to read the root password simply by opening an installer log file. Apparently the installer fails to clean its log files and leaves them readable to all users. The bug has been fixed, and only affects The 5.10 Breezy Badger release. Ubuntu users, be sure to get the patch right away."

Now this is truly funny. The litigious SCO is on the move again, going straight for the user. If SCO can't convince IBM and RedHat that parts of Linux was stolen from SCO, them maybe they can convince you. They're selling Linux desktop licenses for $199 and server licenses for $699. Get the whole scoop on ZDNet.

Martin Taylor, general manager of platform strategies for Microsoft, literally put on a flak jacket before addressing the LinuxWorld conference. Taylor was there to convince Linux users to buy Microsoft's software for its quality, security and legal protection

I was cruising NukeCops when I came across something pretty interesting. It appears Microsoft's first line of defense is Linux. Can you hear the penguin-heads chuckling? Here's the Copy/Paste™ from NukeCops:

Apple has released shipping version 1.0 of their Safari web browser. The browser was developed after MS dropped support of the Mac and is based on the Konquerer kernel. Here's what c|net had to say about it:
"Try Safari if you're really sick of Internet Explorer--it's free, after all--but if secure browsing is your concern, you should hold off or consider Camino."

I don't know about you guys, but the SCO vs IBM Intellectual Property (IP) lawsuit had me a bit worried as to the future of Linux. However, < a href="http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1133141,00.asp">this article has gone a long way towards calming my apprehensiveness. Linus Torvalds explains how he just focuses on the 2.5 to 2.6 kernel and isn't really worried about the lawsuit. WHEW!

Anonymous writes "C|Net has more on the SCO claim that IBM (among others) allegedly broke intellectual property copyright's by using core libraries of their proprietary Unix OS in the IBM's version of Linux called AIX. They've so far done a fairly good job covering the major announcements by both companies, but all in all neither company has rolled out any of their big guns yet.
